Episode 17: "Ceremony" by Leslie Marmon Silko with special guest Robin McLean
In which one of our favorite writers joins the chat
In this episode we get to chat with Robin McLean about Ceremony by Leslie Marion Silko. And, yeah, this is probably our best episode so far, which isn’t shocking because we’re talking about talking with Robin McLean.
Robin is the author of the story collections Reptile House and Get ‘em Young, Treat ‘em Tough, Tell ‘em Nothing and the novel Pity the Beast. She’s also one of the smartest and most insightful readers we know and we’re thrilled she came on. Click here to go to Robin’s site for more info on her work, what she’s up to, and so on.
This conversation could have gone on for hours and hours because Ceremony is simply that kind of novel. We could have gone deeper into nuclear weapons and testing, the residential school system, the “fragile web of the world” as Lori describes it, and so much more, but: that’s the joy of reading and of great books. And we very much hope you give Ceremony a read and dig into this amazing, beautiful, hard book.
